Picture shows the stems which will form the hedge. Each one must be pleached. The wood is cut away from the stem toward the base and in line with the hedge. A section of bark and some sapwood must be left to connect the pleacher to it's roots and keep it alive. Some the side shoots or brash must be removed - know as snedding. Then the pleacher is laid at a slight upward angle to encourage the the sap to rise.
